The Caravelle room
About the rooms' names...
As you may know, Quebec city was at one time a very busy port and ship building was a crucial economic activity. Our house is located in an area where ships were built by the small river (St-Charles river) which used to flow just about behind the house a long time ago !
The Caravelle is a ship invented by the Portuguese and used in the exploration of the African coast, India and of the Americas. Christophe Colomb first discovered the coasts of America in an expedition composed of three ships; two of these ships were Caravelle: the Pinta & the Nina.
The Flute or (Fluit) is a ship designed for merchandise transportation and is equipped with squared rigs. It was used extensively by the Dutch during the 17th and 18th centuries and these ships contributed to the phenomenal development of the Dutch maritime economy.
